let's spend the night together

really great night last night, incredibly rough morning. vowing never to drink again
(we'll see how long that lasts)
vaguely remember hijacking the sound system, and dancing by myself to the rolling stones. toooo cool.

what a drag it is getting old

spend spend spend!

longish and uninteresting post, sorry
so today is my 17th birthday, and i had a sleepover last night with some friends. we watched pulp fiction, slept for about three hours, woke up and watched inglourious basterds, and then headed off to the camberwell markets for the morning.

i found a little basket for $3 that i intend to use as a 1960s-style woven box bag. since it was originally a sewing basket, however, it was full of tiny, quaint little paper packets of needles, spools of thread measured in yards and a pack of fabric name tapes reading "thais gloster" (and christ knows when the name "thais" was popular). pretty cool that i own the sewing materials of a lady that's probably dead by now, though.

then i found a copy of "james dean is not dead", the title of which is probably unfamiliar to most people, but obsessive morrissey fans like me will recognise the name of one of the short biographies he wrote in the early eighties in the pre-smiths era (the other of which was about the new york dolls). i was practically frothing at the mouth once i found that it was indeed credited to one "steven morrissey" and got it for $5. not bad considering copies go for 60 pounds these days.

the rest of the things i found were pretty boring, just a couple of leather bags for $3 and $6 respectively, a pair of white leather shoes for $15, a flowery swimsuit for $10 and a copy of the wall by pink floyd on vinyl in great condition for $20. i had a good birthday :)

music i'm obsessed with right now

albums:

loaded - the velvet underground
not that i haven't always been totally obsessed with this album, but it's really grown on me a lot and i've been listening to oh sweet nuthin' and new age almost nonstop lately.

darklands - the jesus and mary chain
i love basically everything the jesus and mary chain does, and this album is lovely. pretty sure nobody else reconciles my love of feedback with my love of sixties style harmonies like they do

secondhand daylight - magazine
magazine is actually amazing and criminally underrated. both this and their debut real life are part of that rare breed of albums that don't have a bad song on them

phrazes for the young - julian casablancas
i was desperate to see him when he comes to melbourne in may but it's at the palace theatre which is all seated, therefore totally lame. i guess i'll just have to wait until the strokes drop their new album and tour accordingly :(

it ain't gonna save me

it's almost eerie to listen to this song now. R.I.P.

"to descend into hell is easy. but to return - what work, what labour it is!" - virgil

shine on

remember when you were young, you shone like the sun
shine on you crazy diamond
now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky
shine on you crazy diamond
you were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze
come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine
__________________________

you reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon
shine on you crazy diamond
threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light
shine on you crazy diamond
well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze
come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine
________________________

nobody knows where you are, how near or how far
shine on you crazy diamond
pile on many more layers and i'll be joining you there
shine on you crazy diamond
and we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
sail on the steel breeze
come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine

a single man

i saw it today and it is so so beautiful and sad and made me cry. movies never make me cry. except for philadelphia, i always bawl my eyes out in that one. must be something about gay men.
it also causes me actual pain to watch movies about the sixties because i love them so much and it is a constant reminder that i was 30 years too late.
oh well, next term when it's casual clothes i'm planning on having a "sixties tuesday" where i will inexplicably wear my hair in a beehive and dress like jackie o and confuse everyone. because hey, if you can't really live in the sixties, you can at least pretend to once in a while.

call me a nihilist but

maaan i love nietzsche, he basically sums up everything i think about life in general.

"of all that is written, i love only what a man has written with his own blood."

marilyn's pretty

wow that last post was cathartic, anyway sorry to harp on about bob dylan for the third post in a row but it really upsets me that it's difficult to find a copy of dont look back in australian mainstream dvd stores because i would really quite like to see it.

so i realised recently, i spend so much of my time just trying to fly under the radar and succeeding in that 90% of people i know pretend i don't exist, that i am genuinely bemused when someone goes out of their way to be nice to me. it's weird.

also, i'm glad i've been able to get a handle on my self-pitying posts/delete them all, because now and again i see blogs with self-pitying posts and it just comes across as whiny and self-absorbed (not that blog posting isn't, in itself, a self-absorbed and - depending on how many rants you posts - whiny activity) and i feel a bit uncomfortable reading them, it seems almost voyeuristic as if you're gazing into someone's totally crazy neurotic thoughts. that was a really long and poorly structured sentence/entire post, sorry.

idiot wind

generally i keep to myself most of the time, and i like to think that i'm not universally hated because i don't do anything to directly piss people off. however, their are a number of total fucking bitches that exist in my life that dislike me for whatever personal reasons and i would prefer to be rid of them permanently. fortunately this song exists to make me feel better.

i woke up on the roadside
daydreaming bout the way things sometimes are
visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head
and are making me see stars
you hurt the ones that i love best and cover up the truth with lies
one day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzing around your eyes, blood on your saddle.

in dreams

the most vivid dream i have had in my life is one i experienced when i was quite young, maybe 4 or 5.

i was walking down the hawthorn end of glenferrie road, a few metres behind my dad. i shouted out repeatedly, "dad, wait for me!" "please wait!" but he couldn't hear me and he didn't turn around. i kept chasing after him but i could never catch up, he would always remain a couple of metres beyond my reach.

finally, he turned and crossed to the other side of the road. because i was too young to be able to cross the road by myself, i was left stranded on the other side, still calling after him.

my oscars best dressed list

my favourites, in no particular order:

miley cyrus in jenny packham
the dress is a beautiful colour and it's hard to go wrong with a classic bodice/tulle combination like this one. don't know about the quiff, but it's otherwise worn very well.

carey mulligan in prada

carey is totally adorable and i love her dress. while i'm iffy about the hemline, i really like the sweetheart neckline and it's got little forks and spoons and knives embroidered on it (yeah i go crazy for that whimsical shit).

cameron diaz in oscar de la renta
ooooh, sparkly. and odlr will always get my vote.

and this year's most overrated dresses:
sarah jessica parker in chanel
sjp is fawned over by the fashion press constantly, but the things she wears disgust me. i literally despise everything she wears, with the exception of her 2009 oscar gown, but even that had this weird superflous waist belt which kind of ruined it. anyway, this year's dress is shapeless, hideously unflattering and badly accessorised. i hate EVERYTHING about this oscars outfit. so like just stop going out in public pls

i need this coat in my life

but i'm actually so desperate. i've been obsessed with leopard print coats for like a billion years, and i've never seen one available anywhere that i liked. and now thanks to various labels like cacharel and topshop releasing their versions in recent times, knock-offs will probably be hitting the stores here like crazy in winter. i've already seen a princess highway one in dangerfield, but it was in an ugly bomber-jacket style. of course, soon everyone else will have a leopard print coat too, and that pisses me off a lot.

also, i recently saw american beauty, and all i can say is what a ridiculously amazingly beautiful film.
